Trevor Kahn
I Graduated with honours in photography at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria, South Africa, and found my talent a little later in life than most people. I was always interested in wildlife and constantly tried to take photographs of animals. This proved useless, as all the animals would turn their backs to me (even the tortoise). The images I had in my head would not appear as I wanted them to on photographs. I decided to learn how to take good photographs and applied for a place in TUT photographic department.
Along with seriously hard work and the help of the awesome photography lecturers at TUT, I passed my fourth year cum laude. I had been exposed (excuse the pun) to a whole new world of photography that I had never known. Animals were not the only subjects that could be photographed. My degree title was “People of a Nation” in which I researched and photographed the traditional South African cultures. These images would not be politically based and would try as much as possible not to have any western influence. The traditional cultures as they were, are difficult to find. The cultures had to have one thing in common though, happiness. For this study I won Fuji South Africa Student of the Year award, a great honour for me!
Throughout my studies I had done work for clients ranging from DHL Logistics, South African Bureau of Standards, SALGA, NUTESA and TUT. Edge Photographic and Design Studios was formed in November 2006 and was awarded the contract to photograph the Father Christmas photographs at Menlyn Shopping Centre for three years running. In 2007 Edge was awarded the contract for East Rand Mall, Boksburg.
For a company so young, I feel we have achieved a lot.
In 2008 I lectured at TUT on a part-time basis.
I have bigger things in store…..watch this space!
